What $500K Buys: 2 U.S. Engineers or 4-5 in LATAM
The same budget can create very different engineering capacity.

What a $500K Engineering Budget Actually Buys
Last week I wrote about the engineering barbell: keep high-context leadership close to the business, then scale execution where your capital goes further.
Here is the math.
A $500,000 annual engineering budget can fund roughly two fully loaded U.S. software developer seats, or approximately four senior to five mid-level LATAM engineers, depending on country and hiring model.
That does not mean five engineers automatically produce more than two.
It means geography materially changes how much engineering capacity your budget can buy.
Start with the U.S. cost
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median annual software developer pay of about $136,000.
But salary is not the full employer cost.
Once you add benefits, payroll costs, equipment, recruiting, and other employment expenses, the true annual cost can approach $190,000+ per developer.
That puts a $500K budget at roughly:

These are planning estimates, not CloudTask pricing. Actual costs vary by country, seniority, specialization, and hiring model.
But the gap is large enough that it should affect how you design the team.
The real question is not U.S. vs. LATAM
The wrong question is:
“Where can I find cheaper engineers?”
The better question is:
“Where does my next $500K create the most roadmap capacity without adding execution risk?”
If you are an early-stage company and still need a technical leader, principal architect, or highly contextual product engineer, paying the U.S. premium may be exactly the right decision.
But if you already have a strong CTO, VP Engineering, or senior technical leadership team, your constraint may be different.
You may simply need more people capable of executing against an established roadmap.
That is where the economics change.
Instead of adding two more U.S. generalists, the same capital could potentially fund an entire LATAM execution pod.
This is the engineering barbell
The model is simple.
Keep high-context roles close to the business.
Think:
CTO
VP Engineering
Principal or staff leadership
Product leadership
Highly customer-facing technical roles
Then evaluate LATAM for execution capacity:
Full-stack engineering
Backend
Frontend
QA
DevOps
Data
Selected AI engineering roles
The goal is not to offshore leadership.
It is to avoid paying the highest geographic premium for every seat on the org chart.
More engineers can also create more problems
This is where companies get the model wrong.
Five engineers do not automatically outperform two.
If your roadmap is unclear, architecture is unstable, code review is weak, or your CTO has no management capacity, adding more people can actually slow the team down.
So before you hire, ask three questions.
1. Is leadership the bottleneck?
If yes, hire the strongest leader you can find. Geography should be secondary.
2. Is execution capacity the bottleneck?
If yes, LATAM can become highly attractive because you can potentially add significantly more capacity without increasing the budget.
3. Can your current leaders effectively manage more people?
If no, solve that before scaling headcount.
Cheap capacity without management capacity is not leverage.
It is overhead.
What I would do with the next $500K
If I were running a 20 to 200 person software company with product-market fit and strong U.S. technical leadership already in place, I would not automatically put the next $500K into two more U.S. engineering seats.
I would first model the roadmap.
Then I would ask whether that capital could support a three-to-five-person LATAM execution layer under the existing leadership team.
The objective is not to minimize engineering salaries.
It is to maximize engineering output per dollar without increasing execution risk.
That is the real advantage of the barbell.
Put leadership where context matters most.
Put capacity where your capital works hardest.
